Mint azt a vatikáni bejegyzésnél említettem, mindjárt az első nap improvizálni kellett kicsit: az Angyalvártól a Vatikánig vezetett az út. Ugyan nem teljesen egyenesen: egy rövidke kitérővel asztalt foglaltam a Borgo egyik kis éttermében (Rione XIV), ahová tavaly június óta – amikor tehetem –, vissza-visszatérek. Természetesen nap közben a Szent Péter előtti tér (mely a 20. század második felében kiépült felvezető út után is három eltérő szakaszra osztható) tömve van emberekkel. Jellemzően hossszú sor a biztonsági kapuk előtt és ezen felül is sok nézelődő mindenhol máshol.
Viszont ez estére megváltozik. Az emberek eddigre már átmennek vagy a Trasteverére vagy maradnak a Tevere másik oldalán. A borgo-i vacsorát követően úgy döntöttem, hogy egy kis kitérővel újra végigsétálok a Via della Conciliazione-n, immár kora esti megvilágításban. Tavaly nyáron két naplementét is volt szerencsénk végignézni a Palazzo Falconieri loggiájának tetejéről (Róma talán legjobb kilátópontjáról), ahonnan a nap pont a Szent Péter kupolája mellett megy le. Innen jött az ötlet, hogy megnézem a bazilika kupolájának lassú, naplementét követő kivilágítását.
Nagy meglepetésemre a tér eddigre szinte teljesen kiürült. Néhány ember sétálgatott a forgalom elől már évek óta elzárt területen, de a nap közbeni látványhoz képest nagyon kevesen. Annyira, hogy a tér bejáratánál, a Piazza Papa Pio XII (egykori Piazza Rusticucci) bejáratánál egy hatalmas sirály-sereg kezdett gyülekezni. A járókelők által meg-megzavarva időnként felriadtak, elrepültek, de lényegében ugyanazon helyen végigzajongták azt az időt, amíg lassan körbejártam a teret.
As I mentioned in the Vatican entry, the first day had to be improvised a bit: we walked from the Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican. Although not quite straightforward: with a short detour, I booked a table at one of the small restaurants in Borgo (Rione XIV), where I have been returning since June last year, whenever I can. Of course, during the day, the square in front of St. Peter (which can be divided into three different sections even after the road leading to it built in the second half of the 20th century) is crowded with people. It’s typically a long line in front of the security gates and on top of that, many viewers everywhere else.
But that changes for the evening. So far, people are either crossing to Trastevere or staying on the other side of the Tevere. After our dinner in Borgo, I decided to take a short detour through Via della Conciliazione again, now in the early evening light. Last summer I also had the opportunity to watch two sunsets with my colleagues from the top of the loggia of Palazzo Falconieri (perhaps Rome’s best vantage point), from where the sun goes down right next to the dome of St. Peter. Hence the idea to look at the slow, sunset enlightenment of the dome of the basilica.
To my great surprise, the space has been almost completely emptied so far. Some people have walked the streets closed to traffic for years now, but very few compared to the crowd during the day. So much so that at the entrance of Piazza Papa Pio XII (formerly Piazza Rusticucci), a huge army of seagulls began to gather. Disturbed by passers-by, they sometimes were alarmed and flew away, but they made noises in essentially the same place during I slowly walked around the space.
